Summary
To know the etymology of the words helps us to understand language by knowing its history and its origins. In this case it becomes easy to build vocabulary, identify unfamiliar terms and appreciate the meanings of the words according to the given culture. That means that it provides not only context but also aids comprehension in reading and demonstrates how culture and languages developed over time. This article is devoted to study of the etymology of English and Azerbaijanian military terms which reveal the blend of historical influences, technological evolution, word meaning changes over time. The linguistic and historical roots of several common military terms such as: “infantry”, ”’cavalry”, “sword” etc. and even military loans from Latin, Greek, Turkish, Russian and Persian roots are explained and illustrated in this article.
