Summary

Childbirth should be a positive event associated with positive emotions. However, pregnancy itself is a significant life stressor that can accelerate the intensity of depression. A primary pathological fear of childbirth is a clear independent predictor of the development of postpartum depression. Fear of childbirth is not an isolated problem; it is associated with personal characteristics and relationships with close family members. The most common reasons for fear of childbirth are fear of pain and a perceived low pain threshold. Postpartum depression is a serious public health issue worldwide, as the significant negative consequences of the postpartum period threaten not only the health of the mother and child but also the well-being of the entire family.
